Valley Boy was a Black Cube Alumni Project. Presented at RedLine Contemporary Art Center, the exhibition featured works that explored Geiger’s interest in the meditative landscape of the San Luis Valley. The Alumni Program is a continuation of Black Cube’s Artist Fellowship, in which the organization works with previous Artist Fellows on a project that helps further support their practice. Jon Geiger was a 2016 Black Cube Artist Fellow.
Valley Boy is a solo exhibition by Detroit-based artist Jon Geiger, and the artist’s largest solo exhibition to date. Valley Boy features a new body of work that continues Geiger’s interest in both meditative and physical landscapes. Geiger transforms the gallery space into a reflection of the scenery and sensibilities of the artist’s adopted home – the San Luis Valley. In addition, the works pull from the artist’s experience as a Black Cube artist fellow. During his fellowship Geiger created a large-scale installation titled ROAM, a 26-foot-long neon billboard that travelled to five sites in Colorado over the duration of two years. Valley Boy reflects this experience through the artist’s latest works such as The Approach, a large-scale work references a boulder field or rock wall and also references the dimensions of ROAM.
