flood

flood is a group exhibition that uses the flow of a pool party as a curatorial frame, combining contemporary art with a summer tradition to explore the critical intersections of art, leisure, and the environment. In addition to reactivating Black Cube’s permanent outdoor artwork Community Forms by Matt Barton, flood showcases newly commissioned performances and installations by local and international artists Amber Cobb, Anthony Garcia Sr., Rick Griffith, Elle Hong in collaboration with Joshua Ware, Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster, and Bradley Klem. The program includes free and ticketed components.

Throughout the afternoon, the interactive sculpture, skatepark, and FEMA-backed flood mitigation project Community Forms will be free and open for public recreation throughout the event. June 21st marks global Go Skate Day, so be sure to bring your skateboards, roller blades, or other wheeled devices to enjoy Community Forms' peaks and valleys. Adjacent to Community Forms, a massive sculpture composed of life preservers by Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster will be on view. Enjoy free music from local DJs Bimbonita and Hotcakez, as well as food and drink available for purchase.

With the purchase of a ticket, attendees gain access to TAXI’s above-ground shipping container pool, special poolside installations, and an exclusive bar. Viewers can expect floating biomorphic structures from Amber Cobb, beach towels designed by Anthony Garcia Sr., an investigation into respite in relation to activism from Rick Griffith; a performance by Elle Hong and Joshua Ware, as well as Bradley Klem’s un-meltable ice bags. Altogether, flood blends together multiple meanings of its title: to flood in the environmental sense, but also to fill a place with bodies in motion, and to saturate an afternoon with connection, reflection, and the joy of experiencing newly created artworks amidst a moment of overwhelm.

flood includes both free and ticketed components.
